About First Things

Every life tells a story.

And every story, to be fully understood, must be told in the context of other stories.

These other stories, when woven together, make up only a single chapter in the Epic Story of which (oddly enough) we play only a supporting role.

Our stories aren’t about us…

First Things is not about exegesis, but rather about giving context to a narrative that spans eternity.

It isn’t about academics, theory, or trying to prove anything to anyone.  It’s simply refreshing encouragement and practical help for those who need it.

It’s about sharing what I’m learning from my own experiences as I’m working out what it really means to be a follower of Jesus and inviting others to share their own experiences.

It’s about dismissing the distractions to pursue life’s true purpose–pressing deeper into the world’s Reigning King, knowing Him profoundly, drawing from His Life, and being compelled by His glory.

Simple.  Practical.  Christianity.

If you’re new to the site, I would recommend exploring the following blog series. They’ll give you a good idea of the focus of our content:

Hey there! I’m Mike.

I’m just an ordinary guy with an incredible wife and four awesome kids that are growing up way too fast.  I love encouraging believers in small settings and sowing the seeds of God’s Kingdom into my family. In my spare time, I enjoy writing, creative pursuits, and the solitude that comes with exploring the outdoors. While I don’t enjoy it, I’m getting better at home maintenance.

In my early 30’s I began to sense that there was much more to the Christian life than what I had been experiencing.

There had to be something more.

After years of deep searching and spiritual loneliness I emerged with a renewed view of Jesus Christ and His Kingdom that transcended anything I could ever hope or imagine. Today, I pursue our King in simplicity, intimacy, and absolute freedom.

My beliefs have been profoundly shaped and benefited by the works of T. Austin Sparks, Andrew Murray, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Frank Laubach, Watchman Nee, Frank Viola, Sir Ian Thomas, N.T. Wright, and others who have been blessed with a higher perspective and Christ-centered orthodoxy.

But enough about me. What can I do for you?
